Tips on How to Stay Awake While Driving

Many people find themselves sleepy when driving on long trips. Here are some tips to help you stay alert and energized while driving:

  • Take a short nap before you hit the road. A quick nap, about 20 minutes, can help give you some energy before you drive. If you have a long drive ahead of you, try find a little time to get some rest. Less than an hour of sleep can give you enough rest to keep you alert.
  • Eat a well-balanced meal. Try to eat foods that will give you enough energy for a long drive. Complex carbohydrates like whole grains and lean proteins like chicken and turkey can help keep you energized while driving. Avoid eating heavy meals that are high in sugar and processed carbohydrates.
  • Take a multivitamin. Vitamins B and C give you energy. So taking those vitamins along with a healthy meal will help sustain you for a long drive.
  • Drive around the times when you are most energetic. Pay attention to when you naturally feel most awake and when you're most sleepy throughout the day. Avoid driving too late at night.
